Lemon or Sweet orange: how to tell them apart?

Lemon and Sweet orange look alike and are often mixed up. Here is how to tell them apart, feature by feature, with their photos and the details to look for.

⚡ The quick answer

Both share very similar glossy, aromatic evergreen foliage, but the leaves of the sweet orange are clearly smaller than those of the lemon. Lemon flower buds are tinged with purple before opening (pure white flowers in the sweet orange), and its oval, thin-skinned yellow fruit contrasts with the round, thicker-skinned orange.
