Floraneo is a web app that teaches you to recognise the trees, shrubs and plants of France yourself, with short lessons, quizzes on real photos and daily reviews. Free to start, with an optional Premium plan.
Floraneo is an independent project, created and published by Thomas Poirson. The app runs in the browser, with nothing to install, in French and English. It brings together 685 species found in France (trees, shrubs, perennials, wild plants), each with its own profile (leaves, bark, fruit, habitat) and the species it gets confused with. It does not identify a plant from a photo: it teaches you to recognise plants yourself, alongside an app such as PlantNet. The photos come from Tela Botanica and Wikimedia Commons contributors, credited one by one. Free to start, with an optional Premium plan; no ads and no data resale.
Most of Floraneo's photos come from the community of Tela Botanica, the French-speaking network of botanists and plant enthusiasts: more than 1,500 photos, taken by more than 200 contributors, illustrating 468 of the 685 species. Most of the rest come from Wikimedia Commons (more than 1,200 photos). Every photo is credited individually, with its author and licence, on the species profile.
Discover Tela Botanica →Floraneo does not identify a plant from a photo: it teaches you to recognise plants yourself. It does not say what is edible either: the profiles are educational, and you should never eat a wild plant on the basis of an app alone.
Tap an image to open it full size and save it. You may use them to present Floraneo. The plant photos belong to their authors and are published under free licences (credits and licences on each profile).
